For Counselors: Understanding List Scores

Cristina Hernandez Updated by Cristina Hernandez

Streamline the creation and evaluation of college lists, quickly identify students in need of support, and effectively track their progress from early list building to application planning with List Scores.

What is a List Score?

A List Score is a personalized grade for a student's college list, helping counselors assess whether the list is balanced. A balanced list includes an appropriate mix of Reach, Level, and Likely schools, ensuring students have options across different levels of competitiveness. Grades range from A+ to F.

By default, List Scores evaluate colleges marked as Following, Applying, or Applied on a student’s list. However, counselors can choose to focus solely on Applying and Applied colleges for application-specific scoring. Learn how.

To generate a List Score, students need to add at least one college to their list and assign it an Acceptance Likelihood—a value that shows how selective the college is for them. This can be done manually or automatically using Intelligent Match to streamline the process.

Where can I find List Scores?

You can view List Scores in two places:

  • Student Roster: View List Scores in the roster to quickly identify students needing support. Click the score to jump to the student’s My Colleges page, where you can review more closely. You can also sort and filter the roster by List Score.

  • My Colleges: From a student's profile, go directly to their My Colleges page to view their college list and its score. Click the score to open the List Score Details Panel for more information.

Heads up! List Scores with a question mark mean the student is missing key data like GPA or test scores or that the Acceptance Likelihood hasn’t been assigned to at least one of the colleges.

Understanding the List Score panel

The List Score panel provides a snapshot of list balance by grouping colleges into three categories:

  • Reach/Far Reach
  • Level
  • Likely/Very Likely

Each category shows a checkmark tally, helping counselors and students quickly identify gaps or areas for improvement.

The default scoring rubric is set to at least 2 colleges in the Reach/Far Reach category, 3 colleges in the Level category, and 2 colleges in the Likely/Very Likely category. These values are customizable, so if your school uses a different scoring system, you can adjust these minimums in your settings.

Set Intelligent Match from the List Score panel

If Acceptance Likelihoods are missing, the panel prompts you  to Set Intelligent Match to assign them for this individual student:

Here’s how to use this option:

  1. Click Set Intelligent Match from the List Score panel.
  2. Choose an option:
    1. Use Intelligent Match: Intelligent Match will automatically assign acceptance likelihood for every college on the student's list based on their academic profile These values update automatically with changes in the student's academic profile.
    2. Don’t Use Intelligent Match: Select this option if you prefer to manually assign Acceptance Likelihood values instead of using Scoir’s predictions. Any manually assigned values will remain unchanged, even if Intelligent Match predictions are applied later.

After setting Intelligent Match, all colleges on the student’s list will display Acceptance Likelihoods, and their List Score will update accordingly. You can revisit the List Score panel at any time to adjust or refine your selections.

☝️To streamline this process for all students, we recommend enabling Intelligent Match within your high school settings to automatically assign acceptance likelihood values.

Override the List Score

In unique situations, such as athletic recruitment, counselors can override a student’s List Score:

  1. Click Edit under the score in the panel.
  2. Choose the Custom List Score option, adjust the score as needed, and include a note to explain the reason for the adjustment.

The adjusted grade and accompanying note will be visible to the student and their parent(s)/guardian(s).

From the List Score panel, click the 🔍 icon to open the college search page. Filters are pre-applied, making it easy to explore options and refine the list.
