Counselors: Managing Fee Waivers for Common App

Cristina Hernandez Updated by Cristina Hernandez

If a student needs to request a fee waiver for colleges they’re applying to through Common App, the process depends on whether your school uses the Scoir + Common App integration.

This guide explains how students request Common App fee waivers based on your school’s integration status, how you complete your portion in Scoir, and what happens in both Common App and Scoir.

If Your School Uses the Scoir + Common App Integration

Students must request fee waivers directly in their Common App account for any colleges they’re applying to through Common App. Once submitted, you'll receive a notification in Scoir prompting you to approve or decline the request in Scoir.

The Common App Fee Waiver is separate from Scoir’s fee waiver. It only applies to colleges the student is applying to via Common App. For all other application types, students should request a Fee Waiver in Scoir.

How to Complete Common App Fee Waiver in Scoir

After a student submits a Common App Fee Waiver request, counselors can review and approve it directly in Scoir.

  1. Go to the student’s profile and go to Colleges & Applications > Manage Documents.
  2. Scroll down to locate the Common App Fee Waiver and click Approve
  3. Select the economic need indicator(s) that apply to the student, scroll down to review and check the Certification and Consent box, then click Save & Sign to complete the form.
  4. Once you’ve clicked Approved and signed the Common App Fee Waiver, you’ll see the option to Reset Counselor Signature just in case you made a wrong selection. By confirming you’d like to reset, the Fee Waiver will return to the original options for you to Approve or Decline. Once the Fee Waiver is sent to Common App, you won’t be able to reset and this option will no longer appear here.

The student will receive a Scoir notification once you’ve completed the approval.

You can approve multiple fee waivers in bulk from your counselor dashboard. Just click the number next to Needs Fee Waiver, then click each student’s name to go directly to their Manage Documents page.

How to Decline a Common App Fee Waiver

If you’re unable to approve a student’s request:

  1. Go to the student’s profile and go to Colleges & Applications > Manage Documents.
  2. Click Decline next to the Common App Fee Waiver

The student will be notified in Scoir.

Sending Fee Waivers to Common App

Once the student has submitted their application in Common App, you can send the Common App Fee Waiver from Scoir to Common App:

Once sent to Common App, the Fee Waiver cannot be unsent.

If Your School Does Not Use the Scoir + Common App Integration

If your school doesn’t use the integration, students will need to request fee waivers in both Common App and Scoir for their Common App colleges.  Share this student guide for instructions: Using Common App with Scoir if Your School Doesn’t Connect Them

You’ll be notified in Scoir when a student requests the Fee Waiver in Scoir, and you can complete your portion in Scoir as usual.
