For Non Scoir High School/International/Transfer Students: Requesting a Fee Waiver

Customer Support Team Updated by Customer Support Team

How do I know if I am a Non Scoir High School connected student? (not linked to a high school that uses Scoir)

How to Request a Fee Waiver in Scoir

An application fee waiver is a form (AKA a waiver) that allows you to submit your college applications without paying a fee. When using Scoir to discover colleges and plan your application strategy, there are several ways to request a fee waiver.

Requesting a fee waiver when not connected to a high school in Scoir can be done a couple of ways in a few short steps.

You can see more details on fee waiver eligibility in the Federal Income Eligibility Guidelines here.

Requesting a Fee Waiver on your Scoir Dashboard

On your Scoir dashboard, you can see if you qualify for free apps with Scoir by clicking the Find Out button.

Once completed, if you are eligible, the Dashboard and Discovery page will then house a path to browse schools the student can apply for free with Scoir. The tile Free Apps with Scoir will appear.

Requesting a Fee Waiver by Beginning your Application

While you are not technically requesting a fee waiver, you are required to answer questions in the Application Profile that determines fee waiver eligibility. Determining your fee waiver eligibility is done by completing the Fee Waiver section of your Application Profile. Answering “Yes” to any of the fee waiver questions makes you fee waiver eligible for any of the Coalition member colleges you apply to via Apply with Scoir.

Eligibility criteria includes:

  • Qualifying for the Federal Free and Reduced Lunch Program
  • Receiving a College Board, ACT, and/or NACAC fee waiver
  • Being eligible for a Pell Grant
  • Participating in TRIO programs

Additionally, veterans and active members of the U.S. Armed Forces may be eligible for Coalition’s Fee Waiver by selecting criteria in this section of the Application Profile.

If you are eligible for this type of fee waiver, Scoir will make it easy for you to identify where you can apply for free:

How to Request a Fee Waiver Outside of Scoir

  1. Application Fee Waiver from NACAC

The National Association for College Admission Counseling, or NACAC, provides an application fee waiver that is available to students who have limited financial resources, including:

  • You were provided with a fee waiver to take the SAT or ACT
  • You are enrolled in a Free or Reduced Price Lunch Program
  • Your family income falls within the Income Eligibility Guidelines set by the USDA Food and Nutrition Service
  • You're enrolled in a federal, state, or local program that aids students from low-income families
  • Your family receives public assistance
  • You live in federally subsidized housing or a foster home
  1. School-Specific Fee Waiver

In addition to the fee waivers listed above, some schools may provide their own institution-specific fee waivers. Check with a school’s admission office to understand what you’ll need to submit to obtain a fee waiver. And remember, some schools may not charge an application fee at all.

If you are using The Common App to apply, a fee waiver will need to be requested through both The Common App and Scoir. The full Scoir guide to The Common App can be found here.
